    Who was Eve?

Eve was the first woman, created from Adam's rib to be his companion. Deceived by the serpent, she was also the first to receive the promise of redemption.

Eve was created because "it is not good that the man should be alone." God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, and fashioned it into a woman. Adam recognized her as bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh, and together they were one flesh, naked and unashamed in the perfection of Eden.

The serpent approached Eve with cunning questions: "Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" He twisted God's words and promised that eating the forbidden fruit would make her like God, knowing good and evil. Eve saw that the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and desirable for wisdom. She ate and gave to Adam, who ate with her.

Immediately, their eyes were opened to shame. They sewed fig leaves as covering and hid from God. When confronted, Eve blamed the serpent: "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." God cursed the serpent and promised that the woman's seed would one day bruise the serpent's head—the first promise of a coming Redeemer. Eve would also experience pain in childbirth and tension in her relationship with her husband.

Adam named her Eve, meaning "life" or "living," because she would be the mother of all living. Eve bore Cain and Abel, then witnessed the world's first murder when Cain killed Abel. After this tragedy, she bore Seth, saying, "God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel." Through Seth's line, the promise of redemption would be preserved until Christ came.
