Christmas Bible Verses, Nativity Readings & Printables (KJV)
The Christmas story is only about forty verses long, and it has shaped Western civilisation. Below you'll find the nativity accounts laid out in reading order, verses short enough for cards, a Christmas Eve family reading, and free KJV printables you can hand to a whole congregation.
The Christmas story in the Bible, in reading order
Read these five passages in sequence and you have the entire nativity, prophecy included, in about twelve minutes.
1. Isaiah 9:6-7 — the promise. 2. Luke 1:26-38 — the annunciation to Mary. 3. Matthew 1:18-25 — Joseph's dream and the name Emmanuel. 4. Luke 2:1-20 — the journey, the manger, the shepherds, the angels. 5. Matthew 2:1-12 — the wise men and the star.
Two Gospels tell it and they tell different halves. Luke gives you shepherds, Bethlehem, and a mother's perspective; Matthew gives you Joseph, magi, and Herod. Read together they are one story seen from two sides of the room.
"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."Luke 2:10-11 (KJV) — read in context
"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."John 1:14 (KJV) — read in context
Short Bible verses for Christmas cards
Card space is small. These fit on a line or two and still carry the whole gospel.
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11) · "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift." (2 Corinthians 9:15) · "And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." (Matthew 1:23) · "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14) · "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given." (Isaiah 9:6)

A Christmas Eve family reading
Turn off every light except the tree. Read Luke 2:1-20 slowly, in the King James — the cadence is the point. Pause after verse 7 and let the silence sit; that is where the whole thing turns on a feeding trough.
Then ask one question: "Why did the angels tell shepherds first?" Let it hang. The answer — that God announced the birth of a king to the least reputable witnesses in Judea before he told anyone in Jerusalem — is the shape of the entire gospel in one sentence.
Finish by singing one carol and praying one prayer. Keep it under fifteen minutes and the children will ask for it again next year.

Why the manger matters
"There was no room for them in the inn" is not sentimental detail; it is theology. The one through whom all things were made entered his own creation with nowhere to be laid but a stone feed trough.
Paul says it flatly: "Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9). Christmas is not chiefly about a baby. It is about a descent — and about the God who was willing to make it.

Where is the Christmas story in the Bible?
Luke 2:1-20 and Matthew 1:18-25 with Matthew 2:1-12. The prophecies are in Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6-7, and Micah 5:2, and John 1:1-14 gives the theological account of the incarnation.
What is the best Bible verse for Christmas?
Luke 2:11 — "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." It is the angel's own summary of what Christmas is.
What Bible verse should I put in a Christmas card?
Short ones travel best: Luke 2:11, Luke 2:14, Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 1:23, or 2 Corinthians 9:15. Our free printable Christmas verse cards include thirty options ready to cut out.
Does the Bible say when Jesus was born?
No date is given. December 25 was fixed by the church centuries later. Scripture records the event, the place (Bethlehem), and the reign (Caesar Augustus, Quirinius governing Syria) — but never the day.
