Thanksgiving Bible Verses, Readings & Printables (KJV)

Thanksgiving is the one day a year the whole culture pauses to say thank you — and Scripture has been teaching that habit for three thousand years. Everything below is King James Version: verses to read aloud before the meal, a short devotional for the family table, gratitude readings for the days leading up, and free printables you can hand out.

Bible verses to read at the Thanksgiving table

Keep it short. One reader, two or three verses, then the blessing. These are the passages that have been read over Thanksgiving meals in English-speaking homes for centuries — they land in under a minute and they set the tone for everything that follows.

If children are at the table, give each of them one verse to read. It turns a formality into a family memory.

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
Psalm 100:4 (KJV) — read in context
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV) — read in context
"O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Psalm 107:1 (KJV) — read in context
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights."
James 1:17 (KJV) — read in context

A short Thanksgiving devotional for the family

Read Psalm 100 aloud — all five verses. Then ask one question around the table: "What did God give you this year that you didn't ask for?" Let everyone answer, including the youngest.

Notice what the psalm does not say. It never tells you to feel grateful; it tells you to enter, to serve, to come, to know, to bless. Thanksgiving in Scripture is something you do first — the feeling follows the doing. That is why Paul can command it: "In every thing give thanks." A command aimed at the emotions would be cruel; a command aimed at the will is grace.

Close by naming one hard thing from the year and thanking God in it rather than for it. That is the distinction that keeps biblical gratitude honest instead of sentimental.

Seven days of gratitude readings before Thanksgiving

One short passage a day for the week leading up to the holiday. Read at breakfast or in the car — each takes under three minutes.

Day 1: Psalm 103 — forget not all his benefits. Day 2: Luke 17:11-19 — the one leper who came back. Day 3: Philippians 4:4-9 — thanksgiving as the cure for anxiety. Day 4: Psalm 136 — his mercy endureth for ever, twenty-six times. Day 5: Colossians 3:12-17 — and be ye thankful. Day 6: 1 Chronicles 16:8-36 — David's thanksgiving psalm. Day 7: Psalm 100 — read it at the table.

A Thanksgiving prayer you can pray out loud

"Our Father, we come into thy gates with thanksgiving. Thou hast fed us, kept us, forgiven us, and borne with us another year. For the food on this table and the hands that made it, for the faces around it and the ones we miss, we thank thee. Teach us to be thankful people and not only thankful today. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse to read at Thanksgiving dinner?

Psalm 100:4 — "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name." It is short enough to read before the food goes cold and rich enough to carry the whole meal.

    Is Thanksgiving in the Bible?

The American holiday is not, but the practice is everywhere. Israel kept the Feast of Tabernacles as a harvest thanksgiving (Leviticus 23:33-44), the Psalms are saturated with thanksgiving offerings, and Paul commands believers to give thanks in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

What does the Bible say about gratitude?

That it is commanded, not optional (1 Thessalonians 5:18), that it is the doorway into God's presence (Psalm 100:4), and that ingratitude is where spiritual decline begins — "neither were thankful" is the hinge of Romans 1:21.

How can we teach children to be thankful?

Give them a verse to read at the table, a card to colour, and a question to answer. Our printable thankfulness cards and the Kids Hub give you both in a form small children can hold.
