Praying Always in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18)

Prayer is not a seventh piece of metal but the power that puts the whole armour on — 'praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.'

Praying Always in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18)

Paul lists six pieces, then closes the passage with the command that holds them together: 'Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints' (Ephesians 6:18). Armor without prayer is a soldier without contact with his captain. Prayer is how the believer stands, watches, and fights in the strength of the Lord (Ephesians 6:10).

    What Scripture Teaches

    • 1Praying always — at all times, not only in crisis (Ephesians 6:18)
    • 2With all prayer — every kind: praise, confession, petition, thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6)
    • 3In the Spirit — led and helped by the Holy Ghost (Romans 8:26)
    • 4Watching with perseverance — alert and persistent (Matthew 26:41)
    • 5For all saints — warfare prayer is for the whole church, not only ourselves

    Key KJV Scriptures

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"
    "Pray without ceasing."
"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

    The Whole Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18 — six pieces every believer puts on by faith, held together by prayer. Explore each piece below.

    Why It Matters

Every piece of the armour is 'of God' — so it is received and kept on through dependence on God. Prayer is that dependence in action, which is why Paul ends the armour passage with it and immediately asks the Ephesians to pray for him (Ephesians 6:19).

    Application for Today

Put the armour on in prayer each morning: name each piece and ask God to clothe you with it. Keep a short list of other believers to pray for daily — Paul's 'for all saints.' When temptation comes, pray first and quote Scripture second, as Christ did in Gethsemane and the wilderness.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is prayer part of the armor of God?

Ephesians 6:13-17 names six pieces; verse 18 then commands prayer. Many teachers call prayer the 'seventh piece' or the power behind the armour. Either way, Paul treats it as essential to standing.

What does 'praying in the Spirit' mean?

Praying in dependence on the Holy Spirit, who helps our weakness and intercedes for us (Romans 8:26; Jude 1:20).

How do I pray on the armor of God?

Read Ephesians 6:10-18 and pray through it piece by piece: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word — then pray for other believers.
