Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14)
The belt of truth is the foundation of the armor — God's truth and inward integrity that hold everything else in place.
A Roman soldier's belt held his tunic, sheath, and other gear in place. Paul names truth first because every other piece depends on it: without truth, righteousness becomes pretense, faith becomes wishful thinking, and the sword has no edge. The belt is both the objective truth of God's Word and the subjective truthfulness of a believer's heart.
What Scripture Teaches
- 1Listed first — the foundation of the armor (Ephesians 6:14)
- 2Truth is both God's Word and inward integrity (John 17:17, Psalm 51:6)
- 3Lies are Satan's native language (John 8:44)
- 4Jesus is Himself the truth (John 14:6)
- 5Walking in the light keeps the belt fastened (1 John 1:7)

Truth is not just a weapon against lies; it is the structural integrity of the Christian life. Where truth slips, every other piece slips with it.
Application for Today
Fasten the belt daily: read God's Word, speak truthfully, repent quickly, and refuse the small lies that loosen everything. Truth in the inward parts (Psalm 51:6) is what God delights in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 'truth' here about my honesty or God's truth?
Both. Paul means the objective truth of the gospel and the believer's truthful walk. The two cannot be separated for long.
Why is the belt named first?
Because nothing else stays in place without it. Lose truth and the rest of the armor sags.
