Bible Verses About Love for Valentine's Day (KJV)

Valentine's Day is a greeting-card holiday sitting on top of a very old subject. Scripture has more to say about love than any card can carry — including some things the card industry would rather leave out. Below: KJV love verses, 1 Corinthians 13 unpacked, verses for married couples and for the single, and free printable cards.

Peaks in the first two weeks of February

    Bible verses about love (KJV)

Start here. These are the verses used most often on cards, in vows, and on the front of church bulletins in February.

"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil."
1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (KJV) — read in context
"We love him, because he first loved us."
1 John 4:19 (KJV) — read in context
"Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it."
Song of Solomon 8:7 (KJV) — read in context
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
John 15:13 (KJV) — read in context

1 Corinthians 13 — the love chapter explained

The KJV translates agape as charity, which sounds quaint until you notice how carefully the chapter avoids feeling-words. Every item on Paul's list is behaviour: suffers long, is kind, envies not, is not puffed up, seeks not her own.

It was also not written for a wedding. Paul is correcting a church tearing itself apart over spiritual gifts, and his point is that the most impressive gift without love is noise — "sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." Read at a reception it is romantic; read in context it is a rebuke, which is what makes it worth reading at a reception.

    Verses for married couples

For anniversaries, vow renewals, or a card that says something more durable than the standard sentiment.

"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow."
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (KJV) — read in context
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."
Ephesians 5:25 (KJV) — read in context
"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."
Proverbs 31:10 (KJV) — read in context

Verses for anyone who is single in February

The holiday is loudest for the people it excludes. Scripture treats singleness as a station rather than a waiting room — Paul calls it a gift (1 Corinthians 7:7) and Jesus lived it.

Read Psalm 139 rather than Song of Solomon this week. "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made" was written to someone who had not been chosen by anyone in particular, and it is still true in February.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse for Valentine's Day?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 is the classic, but 1 John 4:19 — "We love him, because he first loved us" — fits a card better and says more.

Is Valentine's Day in the Bible?

No. It commemorates a third-century martyr named Valentine and became a romantic holiday in the Middle Ages. The Bible's teaching on love, marriage, and friendship stands entirely apart from the holiday.

What does 1 Corinthians 13 mean?

Paul is telling a divided church that gifts without love are worthless. Every trait he lists is an action rather than an emotion, which is why the chapter reads as a standard rather than a sentiment.

What Bible verses work for a wedding or anniversary?

    Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Ephesians 5:25-33, Colossians 3:14, and Ruth 1:16-17 are the most-used KJV passages.
