Ash Wednesday Bible Verses, Readings & Meaning (KJV)
Ash Wednesday opens Lent with one sentence: dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Below are the traditional King James readings, what Scripture actually says about ashes, a simple service outline for small congregations, and free printables.
The traditional Ash Wednesday readings
Four passages carry the day: Joel 2:12-17, the call to rend your heart and not your garments; Psalm 51, David's confession; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2, be ye reconciled to God; and Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21, where Jesus warns against a fast performed for an audience.
That last reading is deliberately uncomfortable on a day when people wear ashes on their foreheads. It is meant to be. The ash is not a badge; it is a reminder of mortality, and the reading keeps it honest.

What ashes mean in the Bible
Ashes appear across Scripture as the outward sign of grief and repentance. Job repents in dust and ashes. Daniel seeks God with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. Nineveh's king rises from his throne and sits in ashes. Tamar puts ashes on her head in mourning.
In every case the ash is a confession of frailty — a body admitting it is made of earth. Lent begins there so that Easter can end somewhere else entirely.
