Mother's Day Bible Verses, Readings & Printables (KJV)
Mother's Day is a hard Sunday to preach and an easy one to sentimentalise. Scripture honours mothers without airbrushing them — the mothers of the Bible are grieving, scheming, praying, and brave, often in the same chapter. Below: KJV verses, Proverbs 31 read honestly, service readings, and free printables.
Bible verses about mothers (KJV)
Short enough for a card, weighty enough to mean something when it is read aloud from the front of a church.
"Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."Proverbs 31:28 (KJV) — read in context
"Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness."Proverbs 31:25-26 (KJV) — read in context
"As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you."Isaiah 66:13 (KJV) — read in context
"Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."Exodus 20:12 (KJV) — read in context

Proverbs 31 — read honestly
Proverbs 31:10-31 is an acrostic poem, twenty-two verses running the Hebrew alphabet, and it was almost certainly written as praise rather than as a checklist. It is a portrait of a lifetime, not a description of a Tuesday.
Notice what it actually praises: enterprise (she considers a field and buys it), strength (she girdeth her loins with strength), generosity (she stretcheth out her hand to the poor), and wisdom in speech. Beauty is dismissed in the second-to-last verse — "favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain."
Read it to a mother as commendation and it lands. Read it to her as a standard and it crushes. The chapter itself chooses the first.

Mothers of the Bible
Eve, the mother of all living, who buried a son killed by his brother. Sarah, who laughed at the promise and got it anyway. Hannah, who prayed so hard the priest thought she was drunk, then gave the answer back (1 Samuel 1). Jochebed, who hid Moses three months and then let the river carry him. Ruth and Naomi, mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, holding a family together out of loyalty alone. Mary, told at the dedication that a sword would pierce her own soul.
None of these are greeting-card portraits, which is exactly why they preach.

Readings for a Mother's Day service
Proverbs 31:25-31, 1 Samuel 1:9-20 (Hannah), Isaiah 66:10-13, and Luke 2:41-52 make a full order that honours mothers without excluding the women in the room for whom the day is painful.
One pastoral note: name the grief from the front — mothers who have lost children, women who wanted them, people whose mothers hurt them. A single sentence of acknowledgement keeps the morning honest.

What is the best Bible verse for Mother's Day?
Proverbs 31:28 — "Her children arise up, and call her blessed" — is the most quoted. Isaiah 66:13 is the tenderer alternative for a card.
Is Mother's Day in the Bible?
No, it is a twentieth-century American holiday. But Scripture commands the honouring of mothers directly (Exodus 20:12) and repeatedly praises specific mothers by name.
Who are the most important mothers in the Bible?
Eve, Sarah, Rebekah, Jochebed, Hannah, Naomi, Elisabeth, and Mary — each named in Scripture for a decision that changed the story.
What does Proverbs 31 say about a mother?
That she is industrious, generous, wise in speech, strong, and unafraid of the future — and that charm and beauty are not what make her praiseworthy.
