Father's Day Bible Verses, Readings & Printables (KJV)

Scripture speaks to fathers more often as instruction than as tribute — which makes Father's Day a good morning for a sermon and a hard one for a card. Below: KJV verses about fathers, what the Bible actually asks of them, the fathers of Scripture, service readings, and free printables.

    Bible verses about fathers (KJV)

The verses read most often on the third Sunday of June.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) — read in context
"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."
Ephesians 6:4 (KJV) — read in context
"Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him."
Psalm 103:13 (KJV) — read in context
"As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
Joshua 24:15 (KJV) — read in context

What the Bible asks of fathers

Four things, repeatedly. Teach — "thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children" (Deuteronomy 6:7). Provide — "if any provide not for his own... he hath denied the faith" (1 Timothy 5:8). Discipline without exasperating — "provoke not your children to wrath" (Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:21). Bless — the patriarchal blessing runs through Genesis as the thing sons fight over.

Notice the balance. The same New Testament that tells children to obey tells fathers not to embitter them, and it says the second thing twice. Authority in Scripture always arrives with a limit attached.

    Fathers of the Bible

Abraham, asked to give up the son he waited a century for. Jacob, who played favourites and watched it tear his family apart. Eli, whose sons he would not restrain. David, weeping "O Absalom, my son, my son." Joseph of Nazareth, who raised a son who was not his. And the father of Luke 15, who runs down the road while the boy is still a great way off.

Scripture is unusually candid about failed fathers, which is a mercy to anyone reading in June with regrets.

Readings for a Father's Day service

Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Psalm 103:8-18, Luke 15:11-32, and Ephesians 6:1-4 make a complete order — command, comfort, grace, and instruction.

As with Mother's Day, name the room: fathers who are absent, men who wanted children, people whose fathers failed them. Luke 15 preaches best when the ache is admitted first.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse for Father's Day?

Psalm 103:13 — "Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him" — for a card, and Ephesians 6:4 for a sermon.

What does the Bible say a father should do?

Teach his children the Scriptures (Deuteronomy 6:7), provide for his household (1 Timothy 5:8), discipline without embittering them (Ephesians 6:4, Colossians 3:21), and bless them.

Who are the notable fathers in the Bible?

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Eli, David, Joseph of Nazareth, and the father in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32).

Is Father's Day in the Bible?

No — it is a modern holiday. But the command to honour a father is one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12), and Paul repeats it in Ephesians 6:2.
