    Fifty days after Easter

Pentecost Bible Verses, Acts 2 & the Holy Spirit (KJV)

Pentecost is the birthday of the church — the morning a frightened group of disciples walked outside and started preaching in languages they had never learned. Below: the Acts 2 account, what the feast originally was, verses about the Holy Spirit, and readings for a Pentecost Sunday service.

    Peaks in May and June

    What is Pentecost?

Pentecost was already a Jewish feast — the Feast of Weeks, kept fifty days after Passover as a harvest festival (Leviticus 23:15-21). That is why Jerusalem was full of pilgrims from every nation on the morning of Acts 2, and why the miracle of languages had an audience ready to hear it.

The Christian meaning sits on top of that: fifty days after the resurrection, the Spirit promised in Acts 1:8 arrives, and three thousand people are added in a single day.

The day of Pentecost in Acts 2

Read Acts 2:1-21 aloud. The sound like a rushing mighty wind, the cloven tongues like as of fire, the crowd asking "what meaneth this?", and Peter — the man who denied Christ seven weeks earlier — standing up to preach Joel.

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting."
Acts 2:1-2 (KJV) — read in context
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Acts 2:4 (KJV) — read in context
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
Acts 1:8 (KJV) — read in context

Bible verses about the Holy Spirit

Pentecost is one morning; the Spirit's work runs through the whole New Testament. These are the passages most often read alongside Acts 2.

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance."
John 14:26 (KJV) — read in context
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV) — read in context
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought."
Romans 8:26 (KJV) — read in context

    Readings for Pentecost Sunday

A simple order: Genesis 11:1-9 (Babel — languages scattered), Acts 2:1-21 (languages gathered), Joel 2:28-32 (the prophecy Peter quotes), and John 14:15-27 (the promise of the Comforter).

Reading Babel before Acts 2 makes the point without a sermon: what pride scattered, the Spirit reversed.
