Epiphany closes Christmas and opens the light outward: the first Gentiles to worship Christ arrive from the east. Below are the King James readings for January 6, what the feast means, and free printables for the season.
The Epiphany readings
Matthew 2:1-12 is the heart of the day — the wise men, the star, Herod's alarm, and the gifts. Isaiah 60:1-6 supplies the prophecy: nations shall come to thy light, bringing gold and incense. Ephesians 3:1-12 explains why it matters — the Gentiles are fellow heirs.
Read them in that order and the shape of the feast appears: prophecy, fulfilment, meaning.

What Epiphany actually means
The Greek epiphaneia means an appearing or a shining forth. The feast celebrates Christ revealed to the whole world, not only to Israel. Matthew never numbers the wise men and never calls them kings; the tradition of three comes from the three gifts.
The gifts are read as a small creed: gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, myrrh for a burial. The last one sits oddly beside a manger, and it is meant to.

How many wise men were there?
Scripture never says. Matthew 2 records three gifts — gold, frankincense, and myrrh — and the number three was later attached to the men themselves.
