What Does the Bible Say About Halloween? (KJV)
Every October Christian families ask the same question, and the honest answer is that Scripture never mentions Halloween. What it does address — the occult, fear, darkness, and Christian liberty — gives you enough to decide well. Below: the relevant KJV passages, both sides of the argument stated fairly, Reformation Day, and alternatives that work.
What the Bible says about darkness and the occult
Scripture is uncompromising about divination, witchcraft, and consulting the dead — Deuteronomy 18:10-12 lists them together and calls them an abomination. That is the passage most often cited in this discussion, and it is the right starting point.
It is equally clear that a believer has nothing to fear from the dark.
"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch... For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD."Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV) — read in context
"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."Ephesians 5:11 (KJV) — read in context
"Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."1 John 4:4 (KJV) — read in context
"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"Psalm 27:1 (KJV) — read in context

Should Christians celebrate Halloween?
Sincere believers land in three places, and each has a scriptural argument.
Abstain. The imagery of death and witchcraft is not neutral, and Ephesians 5:11 tells believers to have no fellowship with the works of darkness. Families in this camp often close the door and hold a family night instead.
Redeem. Costumes and candy are cultural rather than religious for most neighbours, and October 31 is the one night a year the whole street knocks on your door. Families here hand out full-size candy bars and a tract, and treat it as the easiest outreach on the calendar.
Replace. Churches hold harvest festivals, trunk-or-treats, or Reformation Day parties — same night, same costumes, different content.
Romans 14 is the governing text: "Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." This is a conscience issue, and Paul's instruction is that neither side despise the other.

Reformation Day — October 31
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted ninety-five theses on the church door at Wittenberg, and the Reformation followed. Many Protestant churches mark the date instead of Halloween.
It makes a strong family evening: read Romans 1:16-17 (the verse that undid Luther), tell the story, and sing A Mighty Fortress, which is Psalm 46 set to music. Children who are told they get to celebrate something rarely mind missing something else.
Alternatives for churches and families
Trunk-or-treat in the church car park: low cost, high turnout, and the neighbourhood comes to you. Harvest festival with games and a Scripture memory station. A Reformation Day supper. Or a light-themed night built on Matthew 5:14-16 — costumes allowed, lanterns everywhere.
Whatever you choose, hand out something with a verse on it. Our free printable verse cards fit in a candy bag.

What does the Bible say about Halloween?
Nothing directly — the holiday did not exist. It speaks plainly against divination, witchcraft, and consulting the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) and treats disputable observances as a matter of conscience (Romans 14:5).
Should Christians celebrate Halloween?
Believers differ in good faith. Some abstain on the strength of Ephesians 5:11, some treat it as neutral neighbourhood culture and use it for hospitality, and some replace it with a harvest or Reformation Day event. Romans 14 asks each side not to judge the other.
What is Reformation Day?
October 31, the anniversary of Luther posting his ninety-five theses in 1517. Many Protestant churches hold Reformation Day services or family events on that evening.
What Bible verses help with fear at Halloween?
Psalm 27:1, 1 John 4:4, 2 Timothy 1:7, and Psalm 91 are the passages most often read with frightened children in October.
