    Who was Moses?

Moses led the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery, received the Ten Commandments from God, and guided the people through the wilderness for forty years.

Moses was born during a time when Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed. His mother hid him for three months, then placed him in a basket among the reeds of the Nile. Pharaoh's daughter discovered him and raised him as her own son in the Egyptian palace, unknowingly hiring his own mother as his nurse.

At forty years old, Moses killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave. When the deed became known, Moses fled to Midian, where he spent forty years as a shepherd. There, at the burning bush, God called him to return to Egypt and demand Pharaoh release the Israelites. Despite his protests about his inadequacy, Moses obeyed.

Through ten devastating plagues, Moses confronted Pharaoh, culminating in the death of Egypt's firstborn and the institution of Passover. He led the people through the parted Red Sea and received the Law from God on Mount Sinai. For forty years he led the often-rebellious Israelites through the wilderness, interceding for them repeatedly.

Moses spoke with God "face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend." He wrote the first five books of the Bible and established the foundation of Israelite worship and law. Yet because he struck the rock in anger instead of speaking to it, Moses was not permitted to enter the Promised Land. He died at 120 years old, his eyes undimmed and his strength unabated, and was buried by God Himself in an unknown grave.
