    Big Idea

    Real strength comes from God — and even after we fail, He hears the humble prayer and is mighty to save.

    Story Summary

    An angel told Samson's parents that their son would be a Nazarite to God from the womb — no razor was ever to touch his head — and that he would begin to save Israel from the Philistines. The LORD blessed Samson, and the Spirit of the LORD gave him incredible strength. He tore a lion apart with his bare hands and defeated whole armies. But Samson loved a Philistine woman named Delilah, who was paid to learn the secret of his strength. After much coaxing he told her the truth: his strength was from God and the sign was his uncut hair. She cut it as he slept, the Philistines blinded him and made him grind in the prison. But his hair began to grow back. At a great feast he prayed, 'O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me,' and he pushed down the temple pillars, defeating more enemies in his death than in his life.

    1. Where did Samson's amazing strength come from?

      Teacher hint: From the LORD — the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him (Judges 14:6).

    2. What was the outward sign that Samson belonged to God?

      Teacher hint: His uncut hair — he was a Nazarite from the womb (Judges 13:5).

    3. How did Samson lose his strength?

      Teacher hint: He disobeyed God by telling Delilah the secret; she cut his hair and the LORD departed from him (Judges 16:19-20).

    4. What did Samson do at the very end of his life?

      Teacher hint: He prayed and God gave him strength one last time to defeat the Philistines (Judges 16:28-30).

    Supplies

    • Card stock cut into a strong arm or hand shape
    • Markers or crayons
    • A piece of yarn for hair
    • A Judges 16:28 label

    Steps

    1. Decorate the strong-arm card — let the children make it as bold as they like.
    2. Glue a small piece of yarn at the top as 'Samson's hair.'
    3. On the back, write today's prayer: 'Lord, my strength comes from You.'
    4. Stick the Judges 16:28 label below — recite it together before going home.
