The Good Samaritan: Sunday School Lesson

Big Idea
Loving God means loving our neighbour — and our neighbour is anyone who needs help, even people we don't usually like.
Story Summary
A lawyer asked Jesus, 'Who is my neighbour?' Jesus told about a man going down to Jericho who was attacked by thieves and left half dead. A priest walked by. A Levite walked by. But a Samaritan — a man the Jews despised — stopped, bandaged his wounds, set him on his own beast, and paid for his care at an inn. Jesus said, 'Go, and do thou likewise.' A true neighbour is anyone who shows mercy.

Discussion Questions
- Why did the priest and the Levite walk by the hurt man?
Teacher hint: They were too busy, or didn't want to get involved — even though they served at the temple.
- Why is it surprising that the Samaritan was the hero?
Teacher hint: Jews and Samaritans hated each other. Jesus chose the 'enemy' as the example.
- What did the Samaritan actually do to help?
Teacher hint: Bandaged wounds, used his own oil and wine, his own animal, his own money.
- Who is a 'neighbour' according to Jesus?
Teacher hint: Anyone who needs help — not just people who live next door or look like us.
- Who is one person you can show mercy to this week?
Craft Idea: Helping-Hands Bandage Card
Supplies
- Folded card stock (one per child)
- A real bandage or paper bandage strip
- Markers or crayons
- A Luke 10:27 label
Steps
- On the front of the card, trace and color the child's hand.
- Stick the bandage diagonally across the hand.
- Inside, write: 'I will be a good neighbour like Jesus said.'
- Stick the Luke 10:27 label inside.
- Give it to someone who needs encouragement this week.

- Discussion (10 min): Walk through the questions above. Let every child answer at least once.
- Craft (15 min): Make the helping-hands bandage card.
- Wrap-up (5 min): Hand out the worksheet to finish at home and recite the memory verse one last time.
