Big Idea
Prayer and hard work belong in the same pair of hands.
Story Summary
When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem's wall was broken down, he wept, fasted and prayed — then asked the king for permission to go. Despite mockery from Sanballat and Tobiah, the people 'had a mind to work', building with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other. The wall was finished in fifty-two days.
Memory Verse (KJV)
“I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?”
Nehemiah 6:3
Discussion Questions
- What did Nehemiah do before he spoke to the king?
- How did the builders answer their enemies' mockery?
- Why did Nehemiah refuse to come down and meet Sanballat?
- What 'great work' has God given you that you should not come down from?
