    Story Summary

    Jesus went up into a mountain and taught the greatest sermon ever preached. He blessed the poor in spirit, the meek and the merciful; He called His disciples salt and light; He taught them how to pray and how not to worry; and He finished with two builders, one on rock and one on sand.

    Memory Verse (KJV)

    “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

    Discussion Questions

    1. What does it mean to be the salt of the earth?
    2. Why does Jesus say not to worry about tomorrow?

      Teacher hint: The heavenly Father feeds the fowls and clothes the lilies (Matt 6:26–30).

    3. What was the difference between the two builders?
    4. Whose light in your life has made you want to follow God?

    Craft Idea: Salt-and-Light Lantern

    Supplies

    • Glass jar or paper cup
    • Tissue paper squares
    • Battery tea light
    • Glue

    Steps

    1. Cover the jar with overlapping tissue squares.
    2. Let it dry, then drop in the tea light.
    3. Write Matthew 5:16 on a tag and tie it on.
    4. Turn the lights out and read the verse by lantern light.

    1. Welcome (5 min): Pray, then read the memory verse aloud three times together.
    2. Story (10 min): Tell the story summary in your own words; open a KJV to Matthew 5–7.
    3. Discussion (10 min): Walk through the questions above. Let every child answer at least once.
    4. Craft (15 min): Make the salt-and-light lantern.
    5. Wrap-up (5 min): Hand out the worksheet to finish at home and recite the memory verse one last time.
