Introduction
Before Isaiah tells the fearful 'Be strong' in v. 4, he commands the community to do the strengthening. Encouragement is a body project: strong members lift the tired ones.
Historical Context
Chapter 35 contrasts the desolation of judgment (ch. 34) with the joy of redemption. Exiles trudging home would need both divine reassurance and mutual encouragement.
Original Language Insights
'Confirm' (amets) — to make firm, to brace. Hebrews 12:12 quotes this verse to call New Covenant believers to the same ministry.
Theological Significance
God's strength reaches the weak through the strong. Spiritual encouragement is not a luxury skill — it is a basic gospel duty.
Practical Application
Look around your church this week. Whose hands are sagging? Whose knees are buckling? Be the brace God uses.
