The Biblical Answer
Encouragement is one of the most needed and most neglected ministries in the body of Christ — the simple but powerful act of strengthening another person's heart so that they can continue in faith, hope, and love. The Greek word parakaleo means 'to call alongside,' 'to comfort,' 'to exhort,' or 'to encourage.' It is the same root from which we get Paraclete, the name for the Holy Spirit as our divine Comforter. Barnabas, the Son of Encouragement, exemplified this ministry. His real name was Joseph, but the apostles called him Barnabas because he was known for encouraging others. He encouraged the fearful Saul when the Jerusalem church doubted him. He encouraged the struggling church at Antioch. He encouraged his young cousin John Mark after Paul rejected him. His life demonstrates that encouragement is not merely saying nice things; it is coming alongside someone in their need and strengthening them for the journey. The Bible is filled with commands to encourage one another. 'Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.' 'Exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.' 'Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.' Encouragement has several dimensions. It is verbal — speaking words of hope, affirmation, and truth to those who are discouraged. It is present — simply being with someone in their pain, like Job's friends who sat with him in silence for seven days before they spoke unwisely. It is active — providing practical help, resources, or support that enables someone to keep going. And it is spiritual — pointing people to God's promises, character, and faithfulness when they cannot see them for themselves. The source of all encouragement is God Himself. 'Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.' The comfort we receive from God is not meant to terminate on us; it is meant to flow through us to others. Encouragement is also strategic in the spiritual battle. Nehemiah told the people, 'Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.' His encouragement turned despair into determination. When the church at Jerusalem was persecuted, the scattered believers 'went everywhere preaching the word' — turning their suffering into gospel advance because they had been encouraged by the Spirit and the Word. Every believer is called to be a Barnabas — a son or daughter of encouragement. In a world of criticism, cynicism, and despair, the church should be the most encouraging community on earth. For we know the God of all comfort, and we have been comforted so that we might comfort others.
