    Introduction

Right after Paul calls the church the temple of God (v. 16), he warns that anyone who tears it down will himself be torn down. The privilege is great; so is the responsibility.

    Historical Context

The Corinthians had been splintering the church through factionalism, sexual immorality, and pride. Paul's warning is leveled at those who would destroy what God has built — including from within.

    Original Language Insights

'Defile' and 'destroy' translate the same Greek verb (phtheirei) — measure for measure. The destroyer of God's temple is himself destroyed.

    Theological Significance

God takes the wellbeing of His church seriously enough to defend it personally. Divisive teachers, predatory leaders, and persistent sin-mongers face a real Judge.

    Practical Application

Build up your church; never tear it down. Even when correction is necessary, do it with the temple in mind, not against it.

    Cross-References & Related Scriptures

    1 Corinthians 3:16

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God?"

The previous verse — the identity that v. 17 then defends with severe warning.

    Matthew 18:6

"Whoso shall offend one of these little ones… it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck."

Jesus' parallel warning against harming His people.

    Prayer Response

Lord, make me a builder of Your temple, never a wrecker. Guard my words and actions accordingly. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does 'destroy' mean a believer can lose salvation?

The warning is most naturally read against those whose destructive work reveals they never belonged to Christ at all (1 John 2:19). Either way, the warning is real and demands self-examination.
