Introduction
Paul anchors marital submission in a higher relationship: the church's response to Christ. The marriage analogy is not chiefly about authority — it is about a couple's shared participation in the gospel pattern of love and trust.
Historical Context
Greco-Roman household codes assumed wifely subordination but reduced women to property. Paul reframes the home around mutual gospel imitation (cf. v. 21), elevating the wife's role to a Christ-modeled discipleship inside marriage.
Original Language Insights
'Subject' (hupotassō) — a voluntary ordering of oneself under another, the same word used of Christ to the Father (1 Cor. 15:28). It is dignity, not degradation.
Theological Significance
Submission in this verse is reciprocal to sacrificial love in v. 25. Neither half stands alone; together they form a living parable of the gospel.
Practical Application
Read v. 24 only with v. 25 close by. A wife's trust grows in the soil of a husband's Christlike love, and a husband's love is fueled by Christ's love for him first.
