What is intercessory prayer?

Intercessory prayer is praying on behalf of others—standing in the gap between God and another person or group. It follows the model of Jesus, who 'ever liveth to make intercession' (Hebrews 7:25), and the Holy Spirit, who intercedes for believers (Romans 8:26). Examples include Abraham praying for Sodom and Moses for Israel.

Why is intercession important?

God actively seeks intercessors (Ezekiel 22:30). James 5:16 says 'the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.' Intercession can change outcomes—Job's captivity turned when he prayed for his friends (Job 42:10). It is a primary way believers participate in God's redemptive work in the world.
