Genesis 1
Big Idea
God made everything good, and He made us in His own image to know and love Him.
Story Summary
In the beginning the earth was without form and void, and darkness covered the deep. God spoke, and light burst into being. Over six days He separated sky and sea, made dry land and plants, set the sun, moon, and stars in the heavens, filled the waters and sky with living creatures, and made every animal on earth. On the sixth day God created man in His own image, and on the seventh day He rested — not because He was weary, but because His work was finished and very good.

Discussion Questions
- What did God create on the first day?
Teacher hint: Light — God said, Let there be light (Genesis 1:3).
- Why do you think God looked at everything and said it was 'very good'?
- What does it mean that people are made 'in the image of God'?
Teacher hint: We can think, love, choose, and create — but most of all, we can know God personally.
- Why did God rest on the seventh day?
Teacher hint: Not because He was tired, but to set an example for us to rest and worship (Genesis 2:2-3).
- What is your favorite thing God created, and how can you thank Him for it?
Craft Idea: Days of Creation Wheel
Supplies
- Two paper plates per child
- A brass fastener (brad)
- Crayons or markers
- Scissors
- Ruler
Steps
- Cut a pie-shaped window in one paper plate.
- Divide the second plate into seven equal sections with a ruler.
- Draw a picture for each day of creation in its section: light, sky/sea, land/plants, sun/moon/stars, fish/birds, animals/people, rest.
- Place the window plate on top and fasten them together with a brad through the center.
- Spin the wheel to reveal each day of creation and retell the story.

Lesson flow (45 minutes)
- Welcome (5 min): Pray, then read the memory verse aloud three times together.
- Story (10 min): Tell the story summary in your own words; open a KJV to Genesis 1.
- Discussion (10 min): Walk through the questions above. Let every child answer at least once.
- Craft (15 min): Make the days of creation wheel.
- Wrap-up (5 min): Hand out the worksheet to finish at home and recite the memory verse one last time.
