Introduction
Right after promising that God Himself gives wisdom (v. 6), Solomon adds two further gifts: a reserve of sound wisdom for the righteous, and a shield of protection for the upright walker. Wisdom is supplied as both intellectual capital and defensive armor.
Historical Context
Ancient Near Eastern kings boasted of treasuries; Solomon points to a divine treasury stocked with practical, sturdy wisdom for the righteous to draw on as life requires.
Original Language Insights
'Sound wisdom' (tushiyyah) — wisdom that holds together, that is sturdy and reliable, as opposed to clever schemes that collapse under pressure.
'Buckler' (magen) — small shield strapped to the arm. Wisdom guards the one walking in step with God.
Theological Significance
Wisdom and protection are inseparable in Proverbs. God does not just supply knowing; He supplies safe-keeping for those whose lives align with His.
Practical Application
When you need wisdom for a hard decision, remember God has been storing it up. Walk uprightly, ask, and draw from the reserve already prepared for you.
