Proverbs 18:10 – Meaning & Devotional
"The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."
What This Verse Means
Solomon compares God's name to a fortified tower — a place of absolute safety. In the ancient world, city towers were the last line of defense where residents could flee during an attack. God's name represents His character, authority, and power — everything He is.
The righteous run to this tower and are safe. The verb 'runneth' suggests urgency and intentionality. In times of danger, believers do not passively hope for protection; they actively flee to God. And the result is certain: they are safe — literally 'set on high,' elevated above the threat.
Historical Context
In ancient Israel, fortified towers were essential military structures that provided elevated protection. The next verse (Proverbs 18:11) contrasts this with the rich man's wealth, which he imagines is his strong city. Solomon teaches that true security is found in God, not in material resources.
How to Apply This Today
When danger, fear, or trouble strikes, run to God immediately. Call on His name. His character is your fortress, His power is your protection, and His presence is your safety. Do not trust in wealth, position, or human solutions — trust in the name of the Lord.
