Introduction
Historical Context
Public covenant renewals in the ancient Near East often elicited enthusiastic affirmations. Joshua, wise from forty years in the wilderness, knew emotional response is not endurance.
Original Language Insights
'God forbid' (chalilah) — far be it from us! A strong oath of revulsion.
'Forsake' (azav) — abandon, leave behind. The very thing later generations would repeatedly do.
Theological Significance
Sincere intention is not the same as covenant capacity. The people meant their answer; they could not deliver it. Only grace, not resolve, keeps a covenant.
Practical Application
Beware of the quick 'God forbid!' that has not counted the cost. Slow your covenant promises. Better humble dependence than confident declarations you cannot keep.
