    Introduction

Before God invites Jeremiah to call upon Him (v. 3), He names Himself by His works: Maker, Former, Establisher. Prayer becomes confident when we know who answers.

    Historical Context

Jeremiah is imprisoned in Jerusalem as the Babylonian siege tightens. The God who made and formed Israel can also re-establish her. The covenant name 'LORD' (YHWH) seals it.

    Original Language Insights

Three verbs stack: 'asah (make), yatsar (form, like a potter), kun (establish, set firm). Creation, shaping, and securing — all of them His.

    Theological Significance

God's identity is His credential. He invites prayer in v. 3 only after grounding the invitation in His ability to deliver in v. 2.

    Practical Application

When the call to pray feels weak, rehearse who is listening: the Maker, the Former, the Establisher. Then call.

    Cross-References & Related Scriptures

    Jeremiah 33:3

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things."

The invitation that the divine self-introduction of v. 2 is setting up.

    Isaiah 64:8

"We are the clay, and thou our potter."

Another image of God as Former — the same yatsar verb family.

    Prayer Response

Maker, Former, Establisher — You are the LORD. I bring You every prayer with that confidence. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does God introduce Himself before inviting prayer?

So that the invitation does not feel arbitrary. Prayer is bold because the God who hears is the God who made everything.
