Introduction
One verse before the great self-revelation of v. 6, God descends. He does not summon Moses upward; He comes down. The God who reveals His name is always the God who first crosses the distance.
Historical Context
Exodus 34 follows the golden-calf disaster. That God comes down at all is mercy; that He comes down to speak His name in glory is mercy upon mercy.
Original Language Insights
'Proclaimed' (qara) — to call out, to herald publicly. God is not coaxing the truth out; He is heralding it. His name is news worth announcing.
Theological Significance
Self-revelation is divine initiative. We do not climb to discover God; He descends to disclose Himself. The pattern reaches its climax in the Incarnation, when the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Practical Application
When you want to know God, ask Him to descend in your reading and your prayer. He proclaims His own name to those who wait for it.
