    Exodus 3:14 – Meaning & Devotional

"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

    — Exodus 3:14 (KJV)

    What This Verse Means

When Moses asked God's name, God responded with the most profound self-revelation in Scripture: 'I AM THAT I AM.' This name (YHWH/Yahweh) declares that God is self-existent, eternal, and unchanging. He is not defined by anything outside Himself.

The name 'I AM' means God is the source of all existence. He doesn't have being — He IS being. Past, present, and future are all contained in His eternal 'I AM.'

Jesus later claimed this same title (John 8:58), causing outrage among the religious leaders who understood exactly what He was claiming.

    Historical Context

Moses encountered God at the burning bush on Mount Horeb after 40 years in Midian. When commissioned to deliver Israel from Egypt, Moses asked for God's name — partly because the Egyptians had many gods and Israel would need to know which deity was sending Moses. God's answer transcended all categories.

    How to Apply This Today

Whatever you need God to be today, He already IS. He is not becoming anything — He is complete, sufficient, and present. When you feel uncertain about the future, anchor yourself in the God who says 'I AM' — not 'I was' or 'I will be,' but the ever-present, all-sufficient One.

    🙏 A Prayer from Exodus 3:14

I AM, You are everything I need. You are unchanging, eternal, and completely sufficient. Help me rest in Your nature today, knowing that the One who sent Moses is the same God who walks with me. Amen.
