What does the Bible say about idolatry?

Idolatry is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts—and it remains as relevant today as in ancient Israel. While modern believers may not bow to golden statues, we construct idols of money, success, relationships, pleasure, and self. Key King James Version passages include Exodus 20:3-4, 1 John 5:21, Colossians 3:5. This page collects 10 KJV verses about idolatry, each quoted in full.

What is idolatry in the Bible?

Idolatry is the worship of anyone or anything other than the one true God. In the Old Testament, this often meant literal idol worship (golden calves, Baal). In the New Testament, Paul expands the definition to include covetousness (Colossians 3:5) and anything that displaces God as the center of our devotion.

What are modern idols?

Modern idols include money (Matthew 6:24), career success, romantic relationships, social media approval, political ideology, entertainment, and even self-image. Anything that receives more of your devotion, time, and trust than God functions as an idol in your life.
