Athaliah
Usurping Queen of Judah
Daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, only woman to reign over Judah — slain when Joash was crowned.
Athaliah, daughter of Ahab (and apparently Jezebel), married Jehoram king of Judah. When her son Ahaziah was killed, she destroyed all the royal seed and reigned six years (2 Kings 11; 2 Chronicles 22-23).
Her Story
Athaliah brought the wickedness of the house of Ahab into the house of David. At Ahaziah's death she rose and slew all the royal seed — except Joash, hidden by his aunt Jehosheba, wife of Jehoiada the priest. For six years Joash was kept in the house of the LORD. In the seventh year Jehoiada brought him out, crowned him, and proclaimed him king. Athaliah rent her clothes and cried, 'Treason, Treason.' She was led out and slain at the horse gate; the people threw down the house of Baal and broke its altars.
