The Biblical Answer
Athaliah was the daughter of Ahab king of Israel and Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians. She married Jehoram king of Judah, connecting the royal houses of Israel and Judah. Her influence over Judah was devastating. Through her, the worship of Baal was introduced into Jerusalem. When her son Ahaziah died, Athaliah seized power in the most brutal way imaginable: 'she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.' She murdered her own grandsons to secure the throne for herself and ruled for six years as the only queen regnant in Judah's history. But one grandson, Joash, was rescued by his aunt Jehoshabeath (wife of the high priest Jehoiada) and hidden in the temple for six years. In the seventh year, Jehoiada organized a coup. He gathered the Levites, the commanders of the guards, and the people, showed them the hidden prince, and crowned Joash king in the temple. When Athaliah heard the shouting, she came to the temple and saw the young king standing by a pillar with the crown on his head. She tore her clothes and cried, 'Treason! Treason!' Jehoiada ordered her removed from the temple and executed at the entrance of the horse gate. After her death, Jehoiada led a purge of Baal worship from Judah. 'And all the people of the land rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword.' Athaliah's story is a chilling example of how the influence of Ahab and Jezebel extended beyond Israel into Judah. Her ruthlessness — murdering her own grandsons for power — reveals the depths to which human ambition can sink. But God preserved a seed of David, and the Messianic line continued through the rescued Joash.
