Jezebel
Wicked Queen of Israel
Sidonian wife of Ahab who promoted Baal worship and persecuted the LORD's prophets.
Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, became wife of Ahab king of Israel (1 Kings 16:31). She brought Baal worship into the royal court, slew the prophets of the LORD, and met the death Elijah foretold.
Her Story
Jezebel fed four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal at her table and cut off the prophets of the LORD. When Elijah slew the Baal prophets at Carmel, she swore to take his life. She framed Naboth to seize his vineyard for Ahab, drawing Elijah's word of judgment: dogs would lick her blood at Jezreel (1 Kings 21:23). In Jehu's day she painted her face and looked from a window. Jehu commanded her chamberlains: they cast her down; the horses trod her under; the dogs ate her flesh — and only her skull, feet, and hands were found (2 Kings 9:30-37).
