What the Bible says about praise

Praise in Scripture is loud, physical and public. The Psalms command singing, shouting, clapping, dancing, trumpets, harps and cymbals — Psalm 150 lists them in one breath. Praise is directed at what God has done as well as who He is, which is why so many psalms are essentially lists of remembered rescues. It is corporate memory set to music.

    Praise as a sacrifice

Hebrews 13:15 calls it 'the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips'. Sacrifice implies cost, and the Bible's most striking praise comes from costly places: Job after the news, Jonah inside the fish, Paul and Silas at midnight in a prison. The praise recorded in Scripture is rarely offered by people whose circumstances had just improved.

    Praise and the psalmist's self-talk

Again and again the psalmists command their own souls: 'Bless the LORD, O my soul' (Psalm 103:1); 'Why art thou cast down, O my soul? hope thou in God' (Psalm 42:11). This is one of the Bible's clearest practical patterns — praise is often chosen and spoken to yourself before it is felt. Waiting for the mood first reverses the biblical order.
