    Big Idea

God provides the sacrifice Himself — a picture of the Lamb He would send at Calvary.

    Story Summary

God tested Abraham and asked him to offer Isaac, his only son, on a mountain in Moriah. Abraham rose early and obeyed. When Isaac asked where the lamb was, his father answered, 'God will provide himself a lamb.' The angel of the LORD stopped Abraham's hand, and a ram was caught in a thicket behind him.

    Memory Verse (KJV)

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

    Genesis 22:8

    Discussion Questions

    1. What did Abraham tell his young men before he went up the mountain?

Teacher hint: 'I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you' — he believed both would return (Gen 22:5).

    2. What question did Isaac ask, and how did his father answer?
    3. What did God provide instead of Isaac?

Teacher hint: A ram caught in a thicket by his horns (Gen 22:13).

    4. How does this story point forward to Jesus?

    Craft Idea: Ram-in-the-Thicket Picture

    Supplies

    • Brown paper
    • Cotton balls
    • Twigs or torn paper strips
    • Glue

    Steps

    1. Tear brown paper into a thicket shape and glue it to the page.
    2. Make a cotton-ball ram peeking through the branches.
    3. Write 'God will provide' above the ram.
    4. Add Genesis 22:8 underneath.

    Printable Worksheet

Print the lesson page as the worksheet; older children can write how the ram points to Christ.
