Historical and Literary Context
Proverbs 31:10-31 is an acrostic poem describing the 'virtuous woman' (eshet chayil — literally 'woman of valor/strength'). Traditionally attributed to King Lemuel, who received it from his mother, this passage has been recited by Jewish husbands to their wives every Sabbath eve for centuries. Verse 25 comes near the climax of the poem, after describing her industry, generosity, wisdom, and entrepreneurial skill. The woman described is not a passive, fragile figure but a formidable force — a CEO, philanthropist, teacher, and mother combined. Verse 25 reveals her inner foundation: strength, honor, and unshakeable confidence in the future.
Clothed in Strength and Honor
Clothing in the ancient world communicated status, identity, and character. To be 'clothed' in strength (oz) and honour (hadar — splendor, dignity, majesty) means these qualities define her identity as visibly as garments define appearance. She doesn't put on strength occasionally; she wears it daily. She doesn't achieve dignity through external validation; it is her permanent wardrobe. The Hebrew 'oz' (strength) is the same word used for God's strength in Psalm 29:1. This woman carries divine-quality fortitude. 'Hadar' (honor/majesty) is used elsewhere to describe God's glory. She reflects the character of her Creator.
Laughing at the Future
The phrase 'she shall rejoice in time to come' can also be translated 'she laughs at the days to come.' While others fear the future — economic uncertainty, aging, loss — she laughs. This is not denial or naivety but deep-rooted confidence. She laughs because she has built her life on a solid foundation (v. 30: 'a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised'). Her security is not in her bank account, her appearance, or her relationships but in her relationship with God. When the future is in God's hands, you can laugh at its uncertainties.
Practical Application for Today
This verse empowers women (and all believers) to derive their confidence from character rather than appearance, from divine strength rather than worldly approval. In a culture that clothes women in insecurity and fear of aging, this verse offers a radically different wardrobe: strength and dignity that only become more beautiful with time. For anyone facing an uncertain future — career changes, empty nests, health challenges, financial pressures — this verse models a response: prepare wisely, trust God fully, and laugh at what's coming because you know Who holds it.
