    Introduction

Right after God reveals His eternal purpose for Jeremiah (v. 5), the young prophet's first response is honest protest: 'I cannot speak.' The LORD's call meets every called servant with the same human inadequacy — and overrides it.

    Historical Context

Jeremiah was likely a teenager. The prophets he would oppose were seasoned, powerful figures. His self-assessment was realistic; God's commission was greater.

    Original Language Insights

'Child' (na'ar) — a young man, not necessarily infant. The protest is about inexperience, not literal childhood.

'Ah' (ahah) — an exclamation of distress, anguish. The call cost him before he spoke a single prophecy.

    Theological Significance

Genuine calling is almost always met with felt inadequacy. Moses said 'I am slow of speech.' Isaiah said 'I am a man of unclean lips.' Jeremiah said 'I am a child.' God answers each one with His own sufficiency.

    Practical Application

If you feel unqualified for what God is asking, you are in good company. Speak your honest protest — then obey.

    Cross-References & Related Scriptures

    Jeremiah 1:5

"I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."

The previous verse — God's ordination precedes and overrides Jeremiah's protest.

    Exodus 4:10

"I am not eloquent… I am slow of speech."

Moses' parallel protest meets the same divine answer: God supplies what He commands.

    Prayer Response

Lord, You know my weakness. Touch my lips and send me anyway. Amen.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Was Jeremiah punished for his protest?

No — God answered it patiently in vv. 7–9. He distinguishes between honest weakness and stubborn refusal.
