Nicodemus was a Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin—Israel's ruling council. Despite his position among those who opposed Jesus, he came to Jesus by night with genuine questions. Jesus' response puzzled Nicodemus: "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
