John the Baptist

John was born to elderly parents, Zacharias the priest and Elizabeth, who were both righteous before God. The angel Gabriel announced his birth to Zacharias, declaring that John would be great in God's sight, filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb, and would turn many Israelites back to God. He would go before the Lord "in the spirit and power of Elias" to prepare a people ready for the Messiah.

John grew up in the wilderness, wearing camel's hair clothing and eating locusts and wild honey. When his public ministry began, crowds flocked to hear him preach repentance and receive baptism in the Jordan. His message was urgent and uncompromising: "Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." He didn't spare even the religious leaders, calling the Pharisees and Sadducees a "generation of vipers."

John clearly understood his role as the forerunner, not the main event. When Jesus came to be baptized, John initially protested, saying, "I have need to be baptized of thee." But he yielded and saw the Spirit descending like a dove and heard the Father's voice. John declared, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

John's boldness in confronting King Herod's adultery led to his imprisonment. From prison, he sent disciples to ask Jesus if He was truly the Messiah. Jesus praised John as more than a prophet—the greatest born of women. Yet John was beheaded at a birthday feast when Herod's stepdaughter pleased him and requested John's head on a platter.
