Malachi

Malachi prophesied after the exile, when the temple had been rebuilt but spiritual passion had faded. His name means "my messenger," and his book closes the Old Testament canon, leaving 400 years of prophetic silence before John the Baptist.

Malachi's prophecy uses a distinctive dialogue format, with God making accusations and the people responding with questions. "Wherein have we despised thy name?" "Wherein have we wearied him?" "Wherein shall we return?" This format exposes the people's spiritual blindness—they didn't even recognize their failures.

The sins Malachi addressed were subtle but serious: offering blind and lame animals for sacrifice while keeping the best for themselves, priests who corrupted the covenant, widespread divorce and interfaith marriage, and above all, withholding tithes and offerings. "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me... in tithes and offerings."

Yet Malachi also contains remarkable promises: "The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple." A messenger would prepare the way. For those who fear God's name, "the Sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings." The book ends with a call to remember Moses's law and a promise that Elijah would come before "the great and dreadful day of the Lord"—a prophecy fulfilled in John the Baptist.
