What does the Bible say about propitiation?

Key King James Version passages include 1 John 2:2, Romans 3:25, 1 John 4:10. This page collects 10 KJV verses about propitiation, each quoted in full.

What does propitiation mean in the Bible?

Propitiation means the appeasement or satisfaction of God's righteous wrath against sin. Jesus Christ's death on the cross served as the propitiation—He absorbed God's judgment in our place so that God could forgive sinners without compromising His justice (Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:2).

What is the difference between propitiation and expiation?

Propitiation focuses on satisfying God's wrath (the Godward aspect), while expiation focuses on removing or covering sin (the sinward aspect). Christ's sacrifice accomplishes both: it turns away God's anger and cleanses the sinner's guilt.
