What does the Bible say about blood atonement?

From the first animal sacrifice in Eden to the final Lamb of God on Calvary, the Bible's message is clear: without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. The blood atonement is the scarlet thread woven through all of Scripture, pointing to Jesus Christ, whose perfect sacrifice paid the price for our sin once and for all. Key King James Version passages include Hebrews 9:22, Leviticus 17:11, 1 Peter 1:18-19. This page collects 10 KJV verses about blood atonement, each quoted in full.

What is blood atonement?

Blood atonement is the biblical principle that sin requires the shedding of blood for forgiveness (Hebrews 9:22). In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices pointed forward to Christ; in the New Testament, Jesus' blood provides the final, complete atonement for all sin.

Why was blood required for atonement?

Leviticus 17:11 explains that 'the life of the flesh is in the blood.' Blood represents life itself. Sin's penalty is death, so a life had to be given in place of the sinner — ultimately fulfilled by Christ's death on the cross.
