The New Covenant
Jeremiah's promise of the law written on the heart — fulfilled in Christ's blood.
Jeremiah foretold a new covenant, not like the old, in which God's law would be written on the heart, sins remembered no more, and all His people would know Him. Christ, at the Last Supper, named the cup 'the new testament in my blood.'
The Prophecy
"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah...I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts...for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."
"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you...And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes..."
The Fulfillment
"...This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you."
"But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry...he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises."
The law on the heart
Jeremiah's promise reaches deeper than tablets of stone — God Himself writes His will on willing hearts under the new covenant.
Sealed by His blood
At the cross Christ's blood ratified the new covenant; Hebrews argues that the old has vanished away in favor of the better one.
