Exposition
Jesus teaches that when God's kingdom and righteousness become our primary pursuit, He takes care of our material needs. Priority determines provision.
Historical Setting
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, around AD 28-30. His audience included impoverished Galilean peasants who worried daily about food and clothing. Under Roman taxation and religious tithes, common people kept less than a third of their income. Jesus' command to seek God's kingdom first addressed genuine survival anxiety.
Original Language Notes
'Basileia' means kingdom, reign, or rule. It refers not to a geographical territory but to God's active rule and authority. 'Seeking first' God's kingdom means making His reign the governing priority of every decision, relationship, and ambition.
Pastoral Application
Worry about provision comes from misplaced priorities. When we put God first—seeking His will, His ways, His glory—He promises to meet our needs.
