Matthew 6:33 – Meaning & Devotional
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
What This Verse Means
Jesus establishes life's supreme priority: seek God's kingdom and righteousness first — before career, relationships, security, or material needs. The promise is that when we get the priority right, everything else falls into place. 'All these things' (food, clothing, shelter) will be added.
This is not a formula for prosperity but a principle of trust. When we make God's agenda our first pursuit, He takes responsibility for our needs. The order matters: kingdom first, provisions follow. Reversing this order leads to anxiety and misplaced priorities.
Historical Context
Jesus spoke this during the Sermon on the Mount, after teaching about worry over material needs. His audience was mostly poor Galileans who had genuine concerns about daily provision. Yet Jesus called them to radical trust: prioritize God's kingdom, and He will handle the rest.
How to Apply This Today
Evaluate your priorities honestly. Are you seeking God's kingdom first, or have other pursuits taken the top spot? Reorder your life around this principle: God first, everything else second. Watch how He provides when you get the order right.
