Historical Context
Jesus spoke these words during the Sermon on the Mount, around AD 28-30. His audience included impoverished Galilean peasants who worried daily about food and clothing. Under Roman taxation and religious tithes, common people kept less than a third of their income. Jesus' command to seek God's kingdom first addressed genuine survival anxiety.
Original Language
'Basileia' means kingdom, reign, or rule. It refers not to a geographical territory but to God's active rule and authority. 'Seeking first' God's kingdom means making His reign the governing priority of every decision, relationship, and ambition.
