What the Bible says about shame
Shame enters Scripture in Genesis 3 with hiding and fig leaves, and God's first response is to clothe the pair. That pattern holds: the Bible answers shame with covering rather than with exposure. Romans 10:11 promises that 'whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed', and Psalm 34:5 says those who look to Him have faces that are not ashamed.
Shame and guilt are not the same
Guilt says 'I did something wrong'; shame says 'I am something wrong'. Scripture takes guilt seriously and provides a remedy — confession and cleansing (1 John 1:9). Shame it treats differently, addressing identity rather than actions. Keeping the two distinct is the single most helpful thing a reader can do with this topic.
How Jesus handles the ashamed
The Gospels are full of people who expected exposure and received dignity: the woman at the well, the woman caught in adultery, Peter restored by a charcoal fire. Hebrews 12:2 says Christ endured the cross and despised the shame, absorbing it rather than passing it on. This is the theological basis for saying shame no longer has the last word.
