    Read Chapter

    Introduction

Right after the 'power, love, sound mind' verse (v. 7), Paul applies it: don't be ashamed of Jesus or of me in prison. The Spirit's power is given precisely so the gospel can be confessed when it costs something.

    Historical Context

Paul was in chains under Nero, and Roman Christians were beginning to scatter (cf. v. 15, 'all they which are in Asia be turned away from me'). Association with Paul was dangerous; Timothy was being tempted to keep his distance.

    Original Language Insights

'Ashamed' (epaischunomai) — to feel social disgrace.

'Partaker' (sunkakopatheō) — suffer-together-with. Paul invites Timothy not merely to admire from afar but to share the affliction.

    Theological Significance

The gospel that saves also costs. Verse 7's Spirit-given power is not given for comfort but for courage — the power to confess Christ when it is costly, and to suffer with God's people.

    Practical Application

Where are you tempted to soften the gospel for social safety? V. 8 calls you to a different bravery: speak truthfully, stand with the persecuted church, and trust the same power that sustained Paul in chains.

    Prayer Response
