What the Bible says about rest
Rest is written into the first week of the world. God rested, not from tiredness but as a pattern, and blessed the day (Genesis 2:2-3). By the time of Matthew 11:28 — 'Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest' — rest has become a person rather than only a day. The KJV holds both together: a rhythm to keep and a Saviour to come to.
Two kinds of tired
Scripture treats bodily exhaustion and inner restlessness differently. Jesus sleeps in the boat and tells the disciples to come apart into a desert place and rest awhile — plain physical recovery. But Hebrews 4 speaks of a deeper rest, the ceasing from one's own works, which no amount of sleep supplies. Readers who cannot work out why they are still weary after a holiday are usually meeting the second kind.
Why rest requires trust
Psalm 127:2 calls it vain to rise up early and sit up late eating the bread of sorrows, because God gives His beloved sleep. To stop working is to admit the world continues without you — which is why rest is an act of faith before it is an act of self-care. Israel's manna, gathered double before the sabbath, was training in exactly that.
