"My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth."

What does the Bible say about discipline?

Discipline is one of God's most misunderstood attributes. When life gets hard, we often assume God is punishing us. Key King James Version passages include Hebrews 12:6, Hebrews 12:11, Proverbs 3:11-12. This page collects 10 KJV verses about discipline, each quoted in full.

Why does God discipline believers?

Hebrews 12:6 says God disciplines those He loves. His discipline is not punishment (Christ bore that on the cross) but training—like a father training a child or a coach training an athlete. Its purpose is to produce 'the peaceable fruit of righteousness' (Hebrews 12:11) and to conform us to the image of Christ.

How do I know if something is God's discipline or just life being hard?

God's discipline typically involves conviction of specific sin, a sense of being redirected, and an invitation to repent and grow. General hardship without specific conviction may simply be living in a fallen world (John 16:33). In both cases, God promises to work all things for good (Romans 8:28) and to be with us through it.

Does God's discipline mean He is angry with me?

No. Hebrews 12:6 says 'whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth.' God's discipline is parental, not punitive. It flows from love, not anger. A parent who never corrects a child doesn't love them well (Proverbs 13:24). God's discipline is evidence of your sonship, not rejection.
